Kathmandu – In Cuttack, Odisha, authorities have temporarily suspended internet services and social media access following violent clashes between two communities.
The violence, which erupted after a confrontation during Durga Puja immersion celebrations two days ago, has led to heightened tensions across the city.
In response to the escalating unrest, a 36 hour curfew has been imposed in most parts of Cuttack, aiming to restore order.
The situation worsened when members of the Vishva Hindu Parishad called for a 12-hour shutdown on Monday, escalating the confrontation. Despite not receiving prior permission, workers from the VHP organized a bike rally on Sunday, which was stopped by the police. During the protests, stones were hurled at the officers, resulting in injuries to eight police personnel.
Odisha’s Chief Minister, Naveen Patnaik, expressed his sorrow over the incident and assured that the state government was keeping a strict watch on the situation, promising action against the culprits as per the law. On the other hand, opposition leader and leader of the Biju Janata Dal, Naveen Patnaik, criticized the government for its handling of the situation, urging more proactive measures to prevent further escalation.
As the authorities continue to monitor the situation, the people of Cuttack await a return to normalcy.
