Kanchanpur : In Kanchanpur, a tragic incident occurred on Sunday night when floodwaters entered a house, causing the death of a seven-month-old infant named Sonu Dhanuk from Pahariya in Krishnapur municipality-1. The child fell from a bed onto the water-logged floor.
Additionally, 23-year-old Dambar Chaudhary from Vaivah in Beldandi rural municipality-3 is missing after being swept away by floodwaters from a nearby river, according to Superintendent of Police Chakraraj Joshi. Search operations, assisted by locals, are ongoing to find him.
Continuous rainfall over the past two days has led to flooding affecting 1,700 houses in Kanchanpur, including areas like Bhimdatta, Bedkot, Dodhara Chandani, Punarbas municipalities, and Beldandi rural municipality. All nine local areas in the district are affected.
On Sunday night, Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and Nepal Army rescued 39 people from the affected areas. Security forces are actively present to assist. So far, 1,738 individuals have been rescued and relocated to safer places.
The flood has damaged a culvert at Suda Chowk along the East-West Highway, disrupting vehicular movement. Floodwaters from Mahakali and Jodbudha rivers have inundated parts of Dodhara-Chandani municipality-10. Displaced residents are seeking shelter at ward offices, schools, and with relatives.
Due to rising water levels in the Mahakali River, all sluice gates at Sharada Barrage have been opened. At its peak, the river flow exceeded 400,000 cusecs but has since decreased to 288,000 cusecs. All 24 sluice gates on Nepal’s side of Sharada Barrage in Banbasa are open, and vehicle movement on the Sharada Barrage Bridge has been suspended for the past three days.
