Both earthquakes were centered approximately 290 kilometers west of the capital city, Caracas. Buildings have collapsed across various cities, including the capital, prompting Acting President Delcy Rodríguez to declare a national state of emergency. However, the government has not yet released official figures regarding human casualties.
U.S. President Donald Trump, fearing widespread devastation, has expressed his condolences and pledged all possible assistance.
According to local media reports, a section of the roof at Caracas International Airport collapsed, after which massive columns of dust were seen rising into the air.
This seismic event is being considered the most powerful earthquake to hit the country in the last 126 years. Prior to this, a magnitude 7.7 earthquake had struck the region in the year 1900.
