A gas cylinder explosion in Karachi’s Soldier Bazaar has claimed the lives of 16 people, including four children and six women, according to Geo News. Fourteen others were injured in the blast. The explosion occurred on the first floor of a three-story residential building, causing part of the building to collapse.
Dr. Farrukh Lanjhar, who provided initial details of the incident, said that the explosion appeared to have been caused by a gas leak. He also mentioned that there were concerns that one more body might still be trapped under the rubble, and rescue operations were ongoing. He added that a chemical investigation would be conducted to confirm the exact cause of the explosion, and a thorough investigation would be carried out. Additionally, authorities will investigate whether the building was constructed legally, and if any wrongdoing is found, those responsible will face legal action.
Rescue teams managed to pull many survivors from the wreckage. Among the dead were 10-year-old Nazia and 60-year-old Mohammad Riaz. According to rescue officials, the bodies of a 17-year-old girl, a 19-year-old woman, and an 18-year-old woman were also recovered from the debris. Another woman’s body was found, and the identification process is still ongoing for one of the other deceased victims. Among the injured, a 14-year-old girl was rescued alive.
The explosion has left the community in shock, and the ongoing investigation aims to determine whether negligence or faulty construction played a role in the tragedy.
