Former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has launched a scathing attack on the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, accusing it of actively promoting violence and steering the country into a state of total anarchy. In a written interview with the Indian news agency ANI, Hasina claimed that the situation in Bangladesh has deteriorated significantly since her departure, stating that the “tragic killing” of activist Osman Hadi highlights the lawlessness that has become normalized under Yunus’s leadership. She argued that the interim administration either refuses to acknowledge this rising instability or is fundamentally failing to stop it, which she believes is undermining Bangladesh’s internal security and its credibility on the international stage.
Addressing the political future of the country, Hasina remarked that any upcoming election held without the participation of the Awami League would not be a legitimate democratic process but rather a “coronation.” She accused Muhammad Yunus of ruling the nation without a single mandate from the people and alleged that his administration is intent on banning a party that has been elected to power nine times. Furthermore, Hasina dismissed the legal sentences recently announced against her, characterizing them as “purely political revenge” rather than genuine justice. She claimed she was denied her fundamental right to a defense and access to her choice of lawyers, asserting that the current tribunals are being used as tools for retaliation. Despite these grievances, she expressed a lingering hope in the country’s constitutional traditions, stating that justice will only prevail when a legitimate government is restored and the judiciary regains its independence.
