Moscow | A deadly explosion rocked the Russian capital early Wednesday morning, claiming the lives of three people, including two traffic police officers. According to reports from the BBC and the Russian Investigative Committee, the incident occurred on Yeletskaya Street in southern Moscow during the overnight hours. The two officers reportedly approached a “suspicious individual” near a parked service vehicle to conduct an investigation, at which point an improvised explosive device was detonated. Both officers sustained fatal injuries in the blast, and a third individual—identified by some sources as the suspect who was allegedly planting the device—was also killed on the spot.
This latest act of violence follows a series of targeted attacks in the heart of Russia. Just two days ago, on Monday, Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov, the head of operational training for the Russian Armed Forces’ General Staff, was assassinated in a car bomb explosion only half a mile away on Yasenevaya Street. Russian authorities have opened a criminal investigation into today’s blast, treating it as an “attempted murder” of law enforcement and illegal explosives trafficking. While no group has claimed responsibility, Russian officials have pointed toward Ukrainian intelligence services, suggesting a coordinated campaign to destabilize the capital and target high-ranking military and security personnel.
