In a fiery social media tirade, U.S. President Donald Trump launched a scathing attack on Colombian President Gustavo Petro, labeling him an “illegal drug leader” and accusing him of encouraging rampant drug production across Colombia.
“Gustavo Petro is an illegal drug leader,” Trump wrote. “He is aggressively promoting the massive production of narcotics throughout Colombia. This has now become the country’s biggest business.”
Trump claimed that despite receiving significant aid and funding from the United States, President Petro has done “nothing” to curb drug trafficking calling the situation “a fraud against the United States.”
Taking his criticism a step further, Trump warned that if Petro doesn’t act to stop the drug trade, the U.S. will step in. He suggested cutting all financial aid and grants to Colombia, asserting that the narcotics flowing into the U.S. are causing widespread death and destruction.
“Enough is enough,” Trump said, hinting at stronger U.S. intervention. “If Petro won’t stop it, America will.”
His comments come amid recent U.S. military actions targeting drug-smuggling boats headed for American shores — part of a broader crackdown on narcotics trafficking that U.S. officials say Colombia plays a major role in.
The Colombian government has yet to issue an official response to Trump’s explosive remarks.
