Kathmandu, In a significant diplomatic shake-up, the administration of U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered the recall of nearly 30 career ambassadors from their posts worldwide, including the U.S. Ambassador to Nepal, Dean Thompson. According to reports from major news agencies like the Associated Press and Politico, the U.S. State Department has instructed these senior diplomats to return to Washington by next month. While the administration has not provided a specific reason for each individual recall, officials indicated that the move is part of a broader effort to reshape America’s global diplomatic posture. The goal is to ensure that mission chiefs are fully aligned with the president’s “America First” priorities and foreign policy objectives.
The recall primarily targets career diplomats who were appointed during the Biden administration. Africa is the most affected region, with more than a dozen ambassadors being called back from countries such as Nigeria, Niger, and Rwanda. In Asia, Nepal and Sri Lanka are among the six nations affected, alongside the Philippines and Vietnam. European posts in countries like Slovakia and Montenegro are also included in the list. Despite being relieved of their current ambassadorial duties, these officials are not being dismissed from the Foreign Service but will be reassigned to other roles within the State Department in Washington. In Kathmandu, the timing is particularly notable as the U.S. recall coincides with the departure of the Chinese Ambassador to Nepal, marking a rare period where both major powers will be transitioning their diplomatic leadership simultaneously ahead of Nepal’s upcoming parliamentary elections in March.
